Product Description

N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) is an important precursor to Glutathione, one of the body's most important antioxidants. It also supports Vitamin C's ability to facilitate immune system activation.

Dr. Edelberg's comment: People first ask, "Why not just take glutathione?" The answer is simple: glutathione is such a delicate molecule that it gets destroyed by stomach acid. But when NAC is absorbed into the bloodstream, the body immediately converts it to glutathione.

I recommend NAC for a variety of patients, centered around those with conditions where industrial strength antioxidants are called for. These are people who may be suffering from (or, due to family history, susceptible to) any chronic degenerative condition, from cataracts to cancer, heart disease to Alzheimer's. NAC is not a cure for any of these, but it likely offers protective benefits. For example, elevated blood levels of a certain fat molecule called Lipoprotein(a) have been definitely linked with premature heart disease. Studies have shown that NAC is virtually the only substance that brings down Lp(a).

Dose: My usual recommendation depends on the clinical situation. One capsule daily is fine for maintenance. One capsule twice a day if there are health risks or actual conditions present that need antioxidant support.
