Nobody argues anymore about the effectiveness of light boxes for seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Although I think they’re all rather expensive, buying a light box is cheaper than moving to Arizona. You really don’t need to wait for your doctor to officially diagnose you with SAD. If the dark days of winter make you feel down, or if you start craving more carbs, gaining weight, exercising less, and feeling sluggish, you very likely have SAD variations. Just place the unit wherever you sit for the longest time during the day, turn it on, and leave it on for at least an hour. You don’t have to stare at the light--just be there. Your brain will do the rest, using the light to generate feel-good serotonin, which alleviates SAD symptoms.
