SAMe is involved in more than 35 biochemical reactions involving transmethylation. Methylation is a process needed by the body for such things as synthesizing neurotransmitters, making components of cartilage, regulating enzyme activity within the cell, and maintaining the flexibility of cell membranes.

SAMe is such an amazing nutriceutical that it was featured in Time Magazine several years ago. Nutritionally oriented physicians like me recommend SAMe for mild depression, either alone or in combination with St. John's wort and 5-HTP. I also suggest SAMe as an enhancement to prescription antidepressants, like Zoloft or Lexapro, before increasing a medication dose. To give you an idea how important transmethylation is in the body, other seemingly unrelated uses of SAMe include cartilage repair and liver function enhancement. Suggested dose is 400 mg twice a day. You definitely need to take it on an empty stomach. This means either one hour before a meal or two hours afterward.
